The government's eco-towns are to be designed to minimise car usage with possible fines for residents wishing to drive.
According to reports in today’s Times, residents may be expected to park cars on the outskirts of towns and walk of cycle to their homes.
Proposals could include a fee for a car-parking space, charges for driving at peak times and penalties for driving out of town above a set number of agreed journeys.
The government wants to build ten eco-towns from 2013.
Detailed planning proposals will be published next month.
