Parliament: MPs are in rebellious mood
The government has signalled that it may amend key aspects of the Planning Bill in the face of growing unrest among backbench MPs and opposition.
MPs objections mainly surround the creation of a Independent Planning Commission which would decide on issues of strategic significance such as airports and power stations.
Many MPs are concerned about the loss of the ministerial veto to decide on such schemes.
A spokesman for Communities and Local Government stressed that the Government believed it could "address the issues that have been raised without compromising our overall proposals".
Ministers have already tabled a number of amendments to the legislation.
These aim to strengthen the role of Parliament in deciding on major schemes and ensure local residents are properly compensated damages to their quality of life resulting from them.
The Bill is due to be back in Parliament later this month for final Commons scrutiny before going to the Lords.
