Celebrities join eco-town protest

Michael Donnelly, PlanningResource, 9 June 2008

Around 2,000 protesters marched yesterday against plans for an eco-town in the West Sussex countryside.

The eco-town plans could see 5,000 environmentally friendly homes built at Ford.

Television presenter Ben Fogle joined others supporting the protest including Gordon Roddick, widower of Body Shop tycoon Anita Roddick, and the Duchess of Norfolk, whose family seat is at nearby Arundel Castle.

Deborah Robinson, of Communities Against Ford Eco-town, said: "This would have a terrible impact on the local area. The proposed development would involve concreting over swathes of this beautiful and unique area of coastal river plain, with an irreversible loss to the future of agriculture."

The eco-town would absorb the villages of Ford, Climping and Yapton as well as 756 acres of farmland.

More than 5,500 people have signed a petition against the Ford eco-town, while thousands have written letters of protest to the housing minister, Caroline Flint.
