The Prime Minister Gordon Brown has confirmed that the Government is to look for sites to house new nuclear power stations.
Speaking after a meeting with oil industry executives in Scotland last week, Brown said the Government intends to become "more ambitious" in its plans to develop the UK's nuclear resources.
"We want to do more to diversify our supply of energy and that's why I think we are pretty clear that we will have to do more than simply replace existing nuclear capability in Britain," he said.
The announcement is the first clear indication the Government has given that it will be searching for virgin sites since energy secretary John Hutton sanctioned the need for a new generation of nuclear power stations in January.
Nuclear power is considered vital to the economy of many isolated parts of the UK. But the search for new sites will not go ahead in Scotland as the Scots Government, which has devolved planning responsibility, is opposed to nuclear expansion (R&R, 18 January, p10).
