A campaign group protesting against the Government's eco-town proposals is preparing to challenge the plans through the courts.
The Better Accessible Responsible Development group – which is focussing its campaign on the proposed eco-town earmarked for Long Marston, near Stratford-upon-Avon – has hired lawyers to build a case for a judicial review of the policy.
BARD claims that the Government has contravened the Aarhus Convention, a 1998 United Nations agreement that aims to ensure the public is consulted on developments that affect the environment.
BARD argues that the Government failed to consult on proposals for the 6,000-home eco-town – called Middle Quinton – at Long Marston, and has provided little information about the plans.
A BARD spokeswoman confirmed that a pre-action letter was sent to the Department for Communities and Local Government at the end of last week, and that the group was awaiting a response.
But a DCLG spokesman said the department did not believe there was any basis for a legal challenge.
