The Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) this week said it is not convinced that sustainability has been made central to the Planning Reform Bill.
It spoke out after local government minister John Healey implied that the SDC had endorsed its approach at the bill's second reading.
Healey said the SDC backs the requirement for the secretary of state to prepare national policy statements with the aim of helping to achieve sustainable development.
But the SDC said while it is encouraged by this part of the bill, it still has concerns over the infrastructure planning commission (IPC)
"We would like the IPC to take the same consideration of sustainable development principles in its decision-making as outlined for the national policy statements," the commission argued.
The SDC aims to work with government departments to ensure that they think about sustainable development in the round. It wants to see a more holistic approach rather than departments working separately.
"The integration of policy based on sustainable development principles is critical to overcome the potential for silo delivery," the SDC argued. It also urged the government to look at reducing demand for infrastructure as well as need.
