RTPI welcomes government input to national policy statements

Planning, 7 December 2007

The RTPI has broadly welcomed the Planning Reform Bill but the workings of the proposed infrastructure planning commission and the development of national policy statements (NPSs) have still to pass a series of tests.

Of central importance to the RTPI is the role communities will play in all the new procedures. Secretary-general Robert Upton said: "The RTPI welcomes the commitment that NPSs will be debated fully in parliament before adoption. These are policy issues of national importance and they should be determined by MPs." He urged that most aspects should be location-specific, broadly indicative of routes or locations.
