Caltongate scheme approved

Ben Lee, PlanningResource, 7 February 2008

A controversial £300 million flat and office development in Edinburgh's Old Town has been largely approved by city councillors.

Edinburgh city council's planning committee passed 10 out of 12 applications before it - including a five star hotel and new public square.

Councillors will continue discussing an application for a residential and business facility and a request to demolish buildings in Canongate.

Officers had already backed developers Mountgrange's plans. Minor conditions relating to materials, affordable housing and a community facility were added.

Council leader Jenny Dawe said: "The Caltongate development will breathe new life into a neglected part of the Old Town."

The competed scheme would include 200 homes, offices and restaurants. A street would be built to link Holyrood Palace, the Scottish parliament and Waverley station.

Around 350 individuals and organisations - including Edinburgh World Heritage and the Cockburn Association - have lodged more than 1,800 objections to the project.
