London Borough of Newham
Introduction
One of the UK's most culturally diverse communities, the London Borough of Newham is embarking on one of Europe's most ambitious regeneration programmes. It's an exciting time for the borough. As well as building 60,000 new homes in the next 20 years, we're generating jobs and investments via a new metropolitan centre, international railway station and mixed-use waterfront scheme. And that's not forgetting our plans for The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
At the centre of London's plans for the 2012 Games, we'll be building the Olympic Village on land set aside for the later phases of our £4bn Stratford City development, as well as erecting a new 80,000-seater stadium in Stratford. These plans promise to speed up regeneration in Newham, while leaving a legacy for years to come in the shape of jobs, sporting facilities and affordable environmentally-friendly housing.
Our innovative plans for transport look set to revolutionise the borough, most notably with Stratford International Railway station due to open in 2007, as part of the fast link-route between Kings Cross, north Kent and the continent.
Alongside Stratford, the town centres targeted for regeneration include Canning Town, East Ham and Forest Gate. And forming part of the Silverside Quays mixed-use waterfront scheme, the world-class Biota! aquarium will place Newham firmly on the tourist trail.
We're planning all this - and more - with a view to enabling new and existing communities to flourish. Through our Access to Jobs Partnership, employment and business organisations will work together to ensure that local people develop skills they need to benefit from the wealth of increased job opportunities.
Our regeneration plans look set to transform the borough socially, economically and environmentally. It's no wonder, then, that people are calling us the new centre of London.
Employment opportunities, training and career development
In order to achieve our exciting aims, we're looking for a range of talented professionals. In fact, we're seeking Planners at every level from graduate to principal, as well as Building Control Officers, Regeneration Specialists and Graduate and Senior Transportation Officers.
The scope of our Physical Regeneration and Development Service is anything but limited, with areas such as forward planning, transportation and building and development control covered. Working at Newham could see you involved in our Access to Jobs scheme or establishing One Stop Shops. It could even see you managing one of our major capital projects or contributing to our business development strategy. Career development is high on our agenda and we are strongly committed to training our people through hands-on experience, peer learning and external courses.
At the London Borough of Newham, we demonstrate our appreciation of our staff with a generous and comprehensive range of benefits. These include a contributory final salary pension scheme, flexible working options and possible access to key worker housing. In addition, we actively promote diversity and equality in our employment practice and continually strive to become a leading employer in the field.
