Commission seeks chiefs

Planning, 26 September 2008

The government wants to appoint a chairperson for the proposed infrastructure planning commission (IPC) by the spring and a chief executive soon after.

The DCLG is to put out an advert for the two high-profile posts in the next few weeks, ahead of the Planning Bill becoming law towards the end of the year.

Local government minister John Healey said the early appointments will give developers the confidence to work on infrastructure applications with the knowledge that the IPC will be operational towards the end of next year.

This is when the first national policy statements are expected to be designated. The planning white paper indicated that it was unlikely that the IPC would be running before April. A DCLG spokesman added that it will probably not determine any applications until 2010.
