Sir Simon Milton has been appointed as London Mayor Boris Johnson's senior planning adviser.
Milton has been the leader of Westminster City Council since May 2000. He takes up his new office with immediate effect.
Johnson said: “I’m happy to welcome Simon who is an experienced public servant with a fantastic record of delivery in local government.”
Milton has long been a critic of proposals for tall buildings in the city - in direct contrast to former Mayor Ken Livingstone.
He has been a Westminster councillor since 1988 and chairman of the Local Government Association (LGA) since July 2007.
As leader of Westminster City Council he has overseen the construction of the Golden Jubilee Bridges, where Westminster was the lead local authority; delivered the Paddington Basin and Westbourne Green regeneration projects, and overseen plans for the renewal of the West End.
In addition to his Westminster and LGA responsibilities, Simon is a board member of the Local Government Leadership Centre, a non-executive director of the Energy Saving Trust and a director of the Institute of Urban Information.
