The London Borough of Hackney's acting head of planning Chris Berry has left the council amid an overhaul of the department.
Although the service is being restructured, no-one at the council was able to expand on what changes this will entail. A recruitment campaign to fill newly created management posts for the service on a permanent basis has already begun.
Hackney's planning service has faced some heavy criticism in the past from the Audit Commission and it was labelled as a "standards authority". In 2005 it was rated fair with promising improvement prospects.
Yet in late 2006, the local government ombudsman slammed the authority for failing to take enforcement action on planning breaches.
Berry joined the council in May 2005 and took on the role of interim head of planning in September 2006. A council spokeswoman maintained: "The post was restructured late last month as our planning service moves towards providing an integrated planning and regeneration function."
