Applications total hits dip

Planning, 3 July 2009

Planning applications received by English district-level authorities in the past quarter are down 30 per cent on last year's figures, latest DCLG data show.

Decisions made on residential developments of ten or more homes fell by 46 per cent. The DCLG acknowledged the economy's impact on applications but announced that it will continue its efforts to streamline the planning system in anticipation of recovery.

Measures to cut red tape include allowing businesses to make small improvements without going through the planning process.

The Planning Officers Society argued that despite the fall in fee income, local authorities should retain planners and use their skills to concentrate on developing strategic policy.
