Sussex riverside development blocked

Michael Donnelly, PlanningResource, 4 September 2008

A mixed-use development in an East Sussex conservation area was dismissed despite the scheme offering significant improvements to flood defences and improvements to the public realm.

The scheme involved building 66 apartments and three commercial units.

It would also provide for a flood wall on the west bank of the river Ouse and a river walkway open to the public linking a public square within the development to two bridges and the town’s high street.

The council, however, was concerned that the scheme would fail to preserve the character of the conservation area or the setting of a grade II* listed brewery.

An inspector decided that the scheme, while providing significant improvements to the public realm at certain places within the site, failed to achieve this throughout the development with the lower level being devoted to car parking and servicing.
