Controversial John Lewis plans scaled back

Michael Donnelly, PlanningResource, 28 August 2008

Sprucefield: John Lewis would anchor the scheme

Sprucefield: John Lewis would anchor the scheme

A revised planning application for a John Lewis store at the Sprucefield retail development near Lisburn, Northern Ireland has been submitted.

The proposed £200m development has been dogged by controversy since it was first submitted four years ago.

It has been opposed by traders in Lisburn, Belfast, Banbridge and Craigavon.

They feared their town centres would be damaged by the number of additional retail units attached to the John Lewis application.

The new plans have been scaled down, with the number of ancillary shops being reduced from 29 to 19.

Supporters of the scheme say that if planning consent in not given this time around John Lewis is likely to scrap its plans and open a store in the Republic of Ireland instead.

Lisburn City Council will now consider the plans.
