Government ditches flood plain homes

Michael Donnelly, PlanningResource, 17 July 2008

The government has scrapped plans for 7,500 new homes on a flood plain south-west of Reading.

Regional Minister for the South East Jonathan Shaw MP said the Kennet Valley Park development was not viable.

The plans would have seen former gravel pits turned into a new town for 16,000 people.

The Environment Agency and local campaigners had opposed the plan on flood-risk grounds.

Shaw's announcement came as the government released its proposed changes to the South East Plan.

The 7,500 homes have been removed from the proposals.
