Plan process debate open

Planning, 4 July 2008

The planning process is overly complex and does not involve the community, consultees or elected members effectively, a review into the system has concluded.

Launching a consultation to a brief set by the DCLG in March, review leaders Joanna Killian and David Pretty accepted that improvements have been made. However, they also pointed to delays in pre-application discussions. The consultation will run until 5 September.

The RTPI welcomed the acceptance that mechanistic performance targets are unhelpful. Secretary-general Robert Upton said: "The focus must be on the likely outcomes of applications, how they relate to local delivery framework objectives and how effective they will be in implementation."
