Major initiative to revive Scotswood and Benwell to be launched

A major initiative to revive Scotswood and Benwell in west Newcastle after a decade of clearance is to be launched next month. Four different scenarios ranging from no change to building 2,000 homes and shops will be discussed with local people on 15 February. The event is the start of a series of consultation periods to help create an area action plan to be drawn up by EDAW. The project, funded by housing market renewal pathfinder Bridging NewcastleGateshead, could generate up to £500 million of investment for the area. Subject to planning permission, work is earmarked to start in 2008.
