Extra funding to help Groundwork UK

Almost £2 million of extra funding has been secured to help complete a renewal programme led by Groundwork UK. The Millennium Commission has invested £900,000 to finish work at 11 sites in the Changing Places programme, with local organisations providing match funding. The original scheme involved 21 sites totalling 1,000ha and cost £60 million. A former chemical waste tip, old colliery sites and a neglected ancient scheduled monument are among sites that have been regenerated to provide parks with lagoons, wildlife havens, sports facilities, playgrounds and conservation areas. Groundwork UK believes that it is the biggest ever community-led regeneration programme, having involved thousands of people in reviving derelict areas near their homes.
