Plans given go-ahead for mines by Sth Lanarkshire Council

Controversial plans for three opencast mines near Douglas were given the go-ahead by South Lanarkshire Council last week. Douglas Community Council fears that the pits will create noise, dust and traffic and will damage the local landscape. But Scottish Coal insists that the mines at North and South Brokencross and Poneil will benefit the local community. Environmentalists claim that they will add to pollution from existing mines and sought a public inquiry into the decision.
