Fyson on... Pros and cons of updated planning policy statement

The definitive PPS1, which sets out the "overarching planning policies" intended to guide planning for sustainable development in the coming years, is a great improvement on the consultation draft issued last year. A commendably brief outline of the government's objectives for the planning system is followed by an even shorter statement of "key principles" and two summaries of how to plan and deliver sustainable development. Gone are the substantial annexes on sustainable communities, the plan-led system and design, these vital themes being covered where they belong in the main text.
