In brief: Applications to build homes rises substantially in July

The number of applications to build homes rose substantially in July compared with last year's figures. Statistics from the National House Building Council show that 18,518 applications were made to start homes this July, a 36 per cent increase on the same month in 2003. Private sector starts increased by 31 per cent while there was a 76 per cent rise in housing association applications. New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 13,879 for the month, a seven per cent increase on July last year.
