Last chance to respond to our planning application fees survey

Today is the deadline for responses to Planning's survey on the government's proposed planning application fees increase.

Senior local authority planning officers are being invited to take part in the survey, which we are conducting in partnership with the Planning Officers Society (POS), on the likely uptake and impact of the proposal.

The government’s Housing White Paper announced in February that local planning authorities would be able to increase application fees by 20 per cent from July "if they commit to invest the additional fee income in their planning department".

The following month, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) wrote to local authority chief executives asking them to confirm whether they wished to accept the government’s offer by 13 March.

According to the DCLG, the "vast majority" of local planning authorities in England responded to the letter and the proposal has proved "popular".

This survey aims to elicit information from senior planning officers about how many local authorities have taken up the DCLG’s offer to raise planning application fees, what the increased income might amount to and what they are considering spending the money on.

The responses will inform a special report on the proposal to raise planning application fees that will be published in Planning this summer. The more responses we collect, the more authoritative and useful to our readers the results will be, so your participation is very much appreciated.

The week before last, POS emailed its members a link to the survey and invited them to participate. We would like to hear from any senior local authority planning officers who have not yet taken part, whether they have been contacted by POS or not.

We appreciate our readers' help, and ask those interested in taking part in the survey to respond by the deadline of 8pm tonight (Thursday).

This survey should take no more than about ten minutes to complete, and, as a gesture of thanks, one respondent will be picked at random to receive a prize of £50 worth of Marks & Spencer vouchers.

Your answers will be treated as completely anonymous. However, to make sure that responses are from bona fide senior planning officers, we ask participants to state their name, local authority and role at the end of the survey.
