The chartered town planner replaces Ian McCauley, who is to retire as director of planning and building control in early May after ten years with the department of infrastructure, the Isle of Man Government said. A handover process is already under way.

Gallagher, 44, was previously based in Bolton as the director of planning, transport and housing at the North West's regional leaders' board 4NW.

Gallagher said: "The department has a strong, varied and highly capable management team and I am looking forward to taking my place amongst them."
