Mike Burchell takes new National Retail Planning Forum role

The former deputy chief executive of Essex County Council has been appointed as secretary of the National Retail Planning Forum.

Mike Burchell, who currently works as a planning consultant in the East of England, will take over from George Nicholson, who is leaving the organisation after 16 years.

Burchell will continue his current role as chair of the NRPF research group, and in his new role will be assisted by Miles Davis, who will become secretary of the research group.

Burchell said: "I am looking forward to taking on this new role at a very interesting time for retail planning – the sector will not emerge from the recession the same as it was when it went into it."

He said that the body would focus on producing data on retail planning as the government moves away from a proactive approach to strategic planning.

Burchell was involved in the preparation of the East of England Plan as vice chairman of the Retional Technical Advisory Group and chaired the spatial strategy task group.

Chris Brearley remains as chairman of NRPF.
