The relocation of a beach hut on the Isle of Wight to avoid coastal erosion was allowed after judged that it would not harm an area of outstanding natural beauty. DCS Number 100-059-058
The beach hut stood at the end of a short line of similar structures aligned along a field boundary that extended to the cliff edge.
The appellants were concerned that with the progression of erosion the beach hut could be jeopardised and they wished to relocate it before it was destroyed by future cliff falls.
The inspector observed that the site was within the open countryside within an area designated as AONB and heritage coast. It was proposed to infill a small gap in a line of holiday chalets that had been an established part of the landscape for many years.
Although the council argued that the proposal would result in harm to the landscape the inspector regarded the visual impact of moving the hut about 70m as neutral.
Furthermore, he found that it would free up land that potentially could be used for part of the coastal footpath, replacing a section that had suffered slippage, and thereby representing a planning gain.
