Parked cars would harm dwellings' historical context

Householder development

Planning, 18 December 2008

A proposal for a drop crossing and a timber fence, providing a parking area in front of listed buildings in a Worcestershire was rejected because it would harm their setting. DCS Number 100-059-173

The appeal properties were two dwellings in part of a listed terrace of four houses.

They were separated from a main road through the town by long front gardens and a brick boundary wall. An inspector held that both parked cars and the parking area were modern features which would diminish the historical context of the houses as ones served by long gardens.

The provision of a fence to subdivide the gardens would also weaken their integrity, he opined.
The inspector accepted that the front walls were modern, and that the proposal would retain some frontage walling.

Even so, he considered that the opening up of the wall would weaken the sense of enclosure that the wall provided, and would open up cars to view.
