The conversion of a former oast house in the curtilage of a listed farmhouse in Kent into a summer house has been rejected owing to concern that it would harm the building's historic integrity.
The appellants described the building as a pigeon house. But despite the loss of features such as stowage and a cowl, the inspector decided that it was still recognisable as an oast house. He noted that a proposed door and window would coincide with the remains of a flue and vent and thus erode the interest of the building. He also considered that a proposed cupola similar to those found on many dovecotes would look out of place. He concluded that the building would take on the appearance of something that it never was, losing its historic interest and features.
