The installation of solar panels on a house roof in East Sussex has been found unacceptable following a ruling that they would conflict with the quality of a town conservation area.
The appellant promised that the panels, which had a combined area of more than 5m2, would be colour-matched to the roof. But the inspector noted that the roof showed considerable variations in colour and feared that matching the panels to this background would be very difficult. Even if an exact colour match could be achieved, he was concerned that their reflectivity and uniformity of texture would make them dominant features on the roof plane. They would appear an alien feature in the roofscape, he concluded.
