Listed building consent has been granted to relocate a water trough in a former grade II listed smithy in Northumberland after an inspector ruled it was probably originally located outside.
Listed building consent had been granted in 2001 to convert the smithy to residential use associated with an adjoining cottage. The council claimed that the stone trough would originally have formed part of the forge, being half sunk into the floor and partially recessed into a hearth. The appellant maintained that a previous owner had moved the trough from outside, producing evidence from a local resident who recalled it being in a different position when he was a boy.
Acknowledging the uncertainty, the inspector found it likely that the trough had always been positioned outside and had been relocated before the appellant purchased the property. Relocating the trough alongside the chimney breast was a pragmatic solution that would ensure that the listed building was used to its full potential while highlighting its former use, she concluded.
