An inspector has upheld an enforcement notice directed against the roof of a caretaker's house at a west London health club after finding that its green colour contrasts starkly with the grey roof of the main building.
The inspector accepted that the colour had been chosen to reflect the distinct style of copper roofs found in many places, including prestigious and historic buildings. However, he found that the roof material and colour did not feature in the surrounding area.
He noted that a previous inspector had been quite clear in stating that it should relate to the existing club, including its materials. He considered it an incongruous and eye-catching addition to the built environment. It was a discordant feature that harmed the locality's character and appearance, he held.
The council confirmed that painting the roof and changing its colour to a lead finish would provide a satisfactory resolution which would comply with the terms of the notice.
