DC Casebook: Commercial and Industrial - Farm film studios judged unsustainable

Commercial and industrial

Planning, 16 May 2008

An inspector has upheld two enforcement notices requiring use of a farm in Cornwall as a film studio to cease and associated buildings to be removed after ruling that the operation is unacceptable.

The site contained two large timber buildings and a range of caravans used for make-up and wardrobe purposes. The appellant explained that he made two or three films a year, requiring three weeks in a studio, and the films were then edited, cut and dubbed. He indicated that the film production process could involve as many as 60 people.

The inspector decided that the location of the studio site in a relatively remote rural area was unsustainable because staff and casual labour involved had to travel considerable distances to get to work. The extremely large buildings that had been erected to support the business use also adversely affected the character of the area, she concluded.
